Leg muscle cramps can be very painful. A muscle cramp is a strong, painful contraction or tightening of a muscle that comes on suddenly and lasts from a few seconds to several minutes. It often occurs in the legs. A muscle cramp is also called a charley horse. A cramp may awaken you from sleep but they may also occur while awake at night during periods of inactivity. Cramps most often occur in the calf muscles but can also occur in the thighs or feet. Nocturnal leg cramps are quite painful and cause the affected muscles to feel tight or knotted. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/nocturnal-leg-cramps

Overuse of a muscle, dehydration, muscle strain or simply holding a position for a prolonged period can cause a muscle cramp. In many cases, however, the cause isn’t known. Although most muscle cramps are harmless, some may be related to an underlying medical condition, such as: Inadequate blood supply, pregnancy (decreased calcium and magnesium), exercising (injury or overuse), dehydration, insufficient blood potassium or calcium, standing on hard surfaces, exposure to cold temperatures and medical condition which affect blood flow (kidney disease, MS, peripheral arterial disease and thyroid disease). http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/tc/nighttime-leg-cramps-topic-overview#1
